7 Books Written for ND kids (by NDs)

When your child is diagnosed with neurodiverse conditions, it may be challenging to explain how the way they think, learn, process things and behave is different to other children. These books recommendations were created to help neurodivergent kids to better understand themselves and are written by or with the help of neurodivergents (ND) kids.

1. The abilities in me: Autism

Written for 3-8 year olds, this beautifully illustrated picture book in the The Abilities in me series is dedicated to children diagnosed with Autism (or ASC). The book takes the audience on a journey in the life of a young girl and boy with autism. It aims to bring awareness to the condition among teachers, parents, and children.

2. The abilities in me: ADHD

Written for 3-8 year olds, this is another book in The Abilities in me series dedicated to children diagnosed with ADHD. With rich illustrations, the book takes you through a day in the life of a young girl with ADHD. It encourages children to celebrate their abilities and differences, find acceptance and create awareness among teachers, parents, and children.

3. Spectrum Girl’s Survival Guide

Written by Siena Castellon, who has ADHD, dyslexia and dyspraxia as well as autism, this book is the ultimate everyday guide for any girls with ASC. It covers themes such as non-verbal and verbal communication, and understanding emotions. It also discusses how to navigate physical and mental health and social relationships from friendships, dating to how to survive school and bullying. Many of the reviews state that it is suitable for boys too.

4. Stories that Stand Still (Free ebook)

Created by people with ADHD for people with ADHD, Stories That Never Stand Still is a collection of real-life stories and expert insights charting the exceptional experiences of people with ADHD. This book aims to inspire, educate and empower young people living with ADHD. It further empowers those around them, including their families, teachers, and healthcare professionals.

5. Xtraordinary People: Made By Dyslexia

Beautifully illustrated and suitable for babies to children aged 14, this book celebrates the extraordinary strengths that come with dyslexia. By Kate Griggs, founder of Made By Dyslexia, a global charity that works to help people understand, value and support dyslexia. Richard Branson contributed to this book too.

6. The Girl Who Always Could: An Empowering Tale of the ADHD Experience For Girls, and the Power of Self Love

This new book is a great resource for young girls with ADHD. It aims to celebrate all brain differences, promoting self-acceptance and compassion.  The character, Bea, challenges the expectations of how ADHD normally presents and teaches us the power of knowing how our body and brain function best.

7. Rick Riordan, The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians) 

This popular book series features the fictional character of Percy Jackson. Perry has ADHD and gives an alternative view to what is commonly seen as ADHD challenges, turning them into strengths.
